University Research and Writing
The Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) Summer Writing module is offered by Associate Professor Jon Sufrin, previous director of şÚÁϸŁŔűÍř’s Writing Centre. Over five workshops, Sufrin, a 2012 President’s University-wide Teaching Award winner, will introduce you to many skills essential to good composition, including understanding assignment prompts, generating ideas, locating, integrating, explaining and citing good sources, advancing beyond a five-paragraph essay format and many practical tips for editing your work and improving your writing process. Each workshop will feature writing activities and the chance to get your university writing questions answered – including those around academic honesty, writing software and AI tools such as ChatGPT. Get your university career off to a strong start and learn about all the ways the Writing Centre can help you become a better writer!
In this module you will learn about:
- understanding university assignment prompts: what does your professor want?;
- writing starts with research: what is a good source and where do you find them?;
- constructing your argument: simplifying thesis statements;
- citation and signal phrases: introduce your quotes smoothly and give credit to the source; and
- organize your draft: good introductions and reverse outlines.
You will learn to:
