Dance
York offers a Master of Arts program (MA) and a Master of Fine Arts program (MFA).
The focus of the MA program is to foster the understanding of dance in its cultural, intellectual and social contexts, whereas the MFA program is a studio-intensive program centred on research in contemporary choreography through collaboration and creation.
MA
Established in 1976, the MA in Dance is a three-term program. Students have access to courses in other disciplines such as Music, Anthropology, Visual Arts, English and History. In addition, there is a combined three-year program that leads to both the MA and MBA degree. Our combined emphasis on theoretical and practical approaches to dance is a strength of our program and graduates may be found working in a variety of fields including community, production, therapy, teaching, administrative and archival positions.
MFA
The MFA in Dance Program: Choreography | Collaboration | Creation, reflects the way many contemporary artists are working. This student-centered intensive five-term program requires that you, with other graduate students from a wide-range of disciplines and diverse skill-sets, form collaborative teams, successfully creating, producing and presenting your own work. The program will provide you with the theoretical and technical knowledge necessary to create multi-disciplinary performance art. The MFA is aligned with the Dance Department’s pioneering BFA program (the oldest and largest of its kind in Canada) and builds on the 30-year history of York’s internationally recognized MA in Dance.
