Alternate Offers

Alternate Offers of Admission

Congratulations on your Alternate Offer to York! Alternate offers give you the option of admission to a different, but closely related, program than the one to which you had originally applied.

Why are alternate offers made by ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø?

There may be several reasons we may have made you an alternate program offer.

Supplementary Application Components

Admission to some programs is quite competitive and can be based on supplementary, non-academic information that is assessed along with your academic standing (GPA). For example, an audition or portfolio review is included in the assessment for BFA majors within the School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design, and a timed video Supplementary Application is assessed along with GPA for admission to the Schulich School of Business.

Minimum Required Final Grade Average

Some students do not meet the requirements for their programs of choice because their high-school averages fell below the minimum required final average for their York degree program. Visit the Admitted Students Website for additional information about meeting your minimum grade requirements to maintain your offer of admission.

Note: Minimum grade averages for a college or university transfer student may be different.

Missing Course Prerequisites

Applicants may also receive an alternative offer because their transcripts did not show evidence of one or more of the prerequisite courses required for the program.

Program at Capacity

If you apply for admission after ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø’s application deadline for guaranteed consideration, some programs will have reached  their enrolment capacity. You raise your chances of admission by submitting a complete application package as early as possible. View Application Deadlines

How are alternate offers made?

We review each application carefully. If an application doesn’t meet the requirements for a particular program, ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø’s assessment team will identify related academic programs to which you are currently admissible. You will receive an alternate offer of admission by e-mail. Once you have accepted your offer to your new program, we will update your record. You will be notified by e-mail that there has been a change to your .

Other Questions

Some students will chose to complete the missing pre-requisite(s) during summer school in order to be re-considered for their first choice program. If you intend to do this, you must inform the office of Student Recruitment & Admissions so that we can verify whether space exists in your chosen program, and so that we can adjust your file to include proof of registration in the required pre-requisite course.

Contact the Office of Admissions

York also offers three courses to help you to complete the most commonly required pre-requisite courses for admission. Courses include Math for Admissions, Pre-U Humanities, Pre-U Social Science. Find the courses here: .

When you attend your enrolment appointment, ask your adviser about ways to include your original interest in the new program. Most programs offer the opportunity to add a minor area of study or do a double major. Check our Glossary of Terms at  for definitions to this new vocabulary. Your academic advisor can talk with you about the options available and grades or courses required for achieving your goals.

For the best information about the alternate program to which you've been admitted, check out the our Program Search at . From there, you’ll find detailed program information and links to department contacts who can answer questions specific to your program area.

This may be because you are missing a required pre-requisite course(s) for the degree designation in question. Alternatively, it may be because the program is full, or your current average is below the required cut off for the other degree program.

The good news is that your current record meets the requirements for the alternate degree for which we have made an offer for you to consider. This gives you an opportunity to keep studying within your area of interest.

Qualifying Year programs are offered to applicants who have shown academic promise, but who are slightly below admission averages or missing prerequisites requirements. Students who successfully complete the Qualifying Year program will automatically be transferred into the full program in Year 2. For more information about these programs, please review the PDF documents below.
